Queensland Security Licence Classes

Unarmed Guard
The most common licence class covering static guards, mobile patrols, and general security duties.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a current first aid certificate
- Complete Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218)
- Pass a criminal history check (no disqualifying offences)
- Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work visa
- Be a fit and proper person
Crowd Controller
Required for managing crowds at licensed venues, events, and entertainment precincts. Includes unarmed guard functions.
Requirements
- All unarmed guard requirements
- Complete additional crowd control units within CPP20218
- Hold a current Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
Bodyguard / Close Protection
For providing personal protection services to individuals, including risk assessment and secure transportation.
Requirements
- All unarmed guard requirements
- Complete Certificate III in Close Protection (CPP30619) or equivalent
- Advanced first aid certification
- Demonstrated experience in the security industry (recommended)
- Additional background screening
Dog Handler / Patrol with Dog
For security personnel working with trained guard dogs for patrol and deterrence purposes.
Requirements
- All unarmed guard requirements
- Complete dog handling units
- Dog must be assessed and approved
- Public liability insurance covering the dog
How to Apply
Step-by-step application process through the Queensland Office of Fair Trading
Check Your Eligibility
Ensure you meet age (18+), residency, and character requirements. Check for any disqualifying criminal offences.
Complete Required Training
Enrol in Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218) with a Queensland Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Add crowd control or other specialised units as needed.
Obtain First Aid Certificate
Complete HLTAID011 — Provide First Aid. This must be current at the time of your application.
Gather Documentation
Prepare 100 points of identification, proof of training completion, first aid certificate, and passport-size photos.
Submit Your Application
Apply online through the Queensland Office of Fair Trading portal or in person at a Queensland Government Service Centre.
Receive Your Licence
Once your criminal history check clears and application is approved, your licence card will be issued. This typically takes 2-4 weeks.
